  3.     DIED. Clement F. Haynsworth Jr., 77, federal appeals-court
  4. judge whose nomination by Richard Nixon to the U.S. Supreme Court
  5. was rejected by the Senate in 1969; in Greenville, S.C. Although
  6. the Senate Judiciary Committee voted for Haynsworth's nomination
  7. to a seat vacated by Abe Fortas, the full Senate turned him down
  8. 55 to 45 after civil rights groups and labor charged he was
  9. insensitive to minorities and working people. He continued to serve
  10. as chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit
  11. before retiring to senior judge status in 1981.
